worldwide.
The Challenges We Face Together
In our global village, many millions face violence
or threats of violence in their daily lives. Others live on the frontlines
of environmental degradation, never sure of safe drinking water, adequate
food or even the fuel to cook it.
Some of these conditions are unique to resource-deprived areas like Africa
or Asia. Some are found virtually everywhere including the USA. Nowhere
should such depravation be accepted as normal.
At times these problems seem overwhelming. However, they are not insurmountable.
Every community has forward-thinking individuals and groups dedicated
to self improvement. With access to appropriate tools and support, they
can make a huge difference. These are the people that Pamoja and its local
partners serve.
Pamoja provides the necessary institutional base and support forinnovative
leaders who work towards creative solutions for challenges that face communities,
locally and globally.
Purpose and Partners
Pamoja's community-focused programs work with:
- Physical communities of people living or working together
- Community-based organizations
- Educational communities like universities
- Cohorts of collaborating social service agencies in civil society
Rather than focus on the establishment of a continuous on-site presence,
Pamoja works with local partners, building their capacities to serve their
clients and communities better.
This core value of partnership and coalition building extends beyond
our client populations to other collaborators who share our values. Pamoja:
- Strives to incubate ideas, foster experimentation and develop networks
to spread the benefits of successful innovations.
- Supports social entrepreneurs who need an institutional home and support
for development and execution of their ideas
- Partners with civil society organizations that want to expand skills
and try novel approaches to address community needs
- Encourages companies that make and/or market products and services
in keeping with our goals
- Joins educators and trainers who bring new tools, skills and perspectives
to community issues
- Welcoms donors and grantmakers of all kinds who seek philanthropic
opportunities that contribute to healthy, sustainable communities
Program Areas
Each of Pamoja's three program areas has both current
and planned activities, with new ideas in the making:
- Renewable energy: Promotion of Technologies
in Renewable Energy Enterprises (ProTREE) works with producer groups
and businesses in Africa to develop and promote new fuels
- Peace education: Making Peace
Where I Live (MAPWIL) is a curriculum for sixth grade students worldwide
to help them learn about peaceful solutions to conflict from identified
peacemakers in their communities

develop the skills to generate grant funding. Leaders from 30 countries
have benefited to date
